Santa Cruz

Our California adventures continue...

After landing in Sacramento and while waiting to get our luggage, my mother-in-law tells us that before they knew we were coming they had rented a beach house in Santa Cruz for the coming weekend (actually starting on Thursday). And that there is plenty of room if we wanted to go, but that we didn't have to if we had made other plans. However, we would have to decide on Thursday morning (my father-in-law was going ahead, my mother-in-law was staying home until Friday to wait for Tom to finish school, but we couldn't all fit in her car, so if we wanted to go we'd have to go on Thursday).

Well, this one was a no brainer, who in the world would turn down an offer to go to the beach over "other plans"? Not us! (and we hadn't really made other plans anyway). So on Thursday, mid-morning, after sleeping for only a few hours, I did some unpacking and packed a smaller suitcase and off we went; a three hour drive and we were by the ocean!

The house was great, very spacious, with a lovely ocean view! Beside the master bedroom which mom and dad took, there were two other large bedrooms - one with an ocean view, the other with a courtyard view. Considering we were the first ones there (more family were coming on Friday and Saturday), which one should we take? Hmmm, another no brainer! :) There was also a sofa bed and lots of space for sleeping on the floor in the living room.

Haunted by the jet lag, the four of us woke up around 5:00 the first morning. Ben let me stay in bed and read (oh, sweet vacation!) and he went and fed the kids breakfast. It was still dark outside, so Alex kept saying "it's fun to have breakfast in the middle of the night". :)

When it got a bit lighter I decided to go for a walk. And the beauty of the surroundings just proved to me that jet lag isn't always bad! I caught a gorgeous sunrise on camera, filled my lungs with ocean smell and then went back home as it was freezing! :)

Alex was so excited to go on a bike ride with uncle Andy.

As more family arrived the kids were excited to be (re)introduced to cousins, aunts and uncles and went straight to playing, even though at times I noticed them being slightly overwhelmed by the multitude of people. :) We took a couple of trips to the beach, went to Santa Cruz Boardwalk where the kids got on a few rides, had a yummy BBQ one evening and relaxed, relaxed, relaxed!
I'll let the pictures tell the story...
